Cade located Club Mayhem with no trouble. He’d scouted the area earlier in the day before allowing himself a few minutes to check on Missy. She’d been studying on the deck of her house. The temperature had descended into the low forties, but she wore the lightest of jackets. He remained downwind and watched her for almost an hour, as though he were some mooning teenager. She appeared so preoccupied, he’d been loath to interrupt.

Leaving her, he’d gone to check the club’s location. During his observation, he counted a dozen shifters arriving—different species, every one. Leave it to him to choose an area with a strong mongrel presence. It made sense. Mongrels were often not welcome in pride lands, and they were not always comfortable even when a pack accepted them. His cell phone beeped several times during his observation.

Rath and Jax had narrowed the house hunt down to two properties. Cade had seen them prior to their arrival. He preferred one of the two they’d deemed acceptable. Both had direct access to the mountains, and neither had nearby neighbors. Both sat on good land and were open to negotiation on price. He’d be in debt until he died, but his pride would have a sanctuary and over a hundred acres of privacy, not including the public lands they could access.

The club was his last problem, the club and the Kodiak.

Then she walked across his line of sight, and Cade had to blink. Missy was there? Had she known about the club when she met him? No. She was not an adept liar, and she’d been shocked to meet another shifter.

It took every ounce of his self-control not to leap down and sweep her away from the club. His instincts screamed at him to protect her, but he had to think of his pride. He needed to know the Kodiak’s weaknesses—the club’s weaknesses—and if the mongrels in the area came here, it was an easy place to eradicate their competition.

His cat paced with agitation inside of him. The beast didn’t like it—whether it was the idea of eradicating the mongrels or watching Missy disappear inside, Cade couldn’t be quite sure.

Still…the minutes ticked by, and she didn’t reappear. Ten minutes after she’d gone inside, he leapt off the building and stalked toward the door. Missy’d had no idea about this place before she’d met him. So they had to have reached out to her—and at the same time Jonah reached out to him. The Kodiak had to know Cade was interested.

He paused.

Yes! His beast’s agitation had a singular cause. His cat liked Missy. Cade liked her, too. She was inside the building, surrounded by others, and she didn’t understand the rules or the challenges. The Kodiak had an excellent hostage. The concept was unacceptable on every level.

The camera whirred and focused on him. Lifting his head, he stared at it and let his lion show in his eyes.

The door unlocked and Cade strode inside. He didn’t slow down when the second
